Olympic Games Gold Medalist Athlete. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, he was considered one of the best track athletes of his time. A member of the 1908 United States Olympic team, he participated in the Olympics that year in London, England. When he won the Gold Medal as part of the 4 x 400 meter relay event in those games, he became the first African-American gold medalist. He died of typhoid in his home in Philadelphia only a few months later.
