son of Martin Hawk & Mary Polly Meredith, they lived on their 130 acre farm in a 4 room house, expanded to 6 rooms, with no servants nor slaves.

1st wife, Sarah Annis Doane on 4 Aug 1864.

James married Sarah Amanda Hayes on 24 Dec 1896.

James served as a Pvt in Company G, 19th TN Cavalry. His younger brothers Hiram & William served in the same Company. James' memories of the war were short & to the point: "Fishing Creek battle all day, Shiloh battle for two days," James said. "I was in lots of small battles and skirmishes. Some times we had very scanty rations and some days nothing to eat at all. We had to furnish our own clothes. I was never wounded or in prison."

James Meredith Hawk died at age 88.
Obit & Death records list his date of birth as 3 March 1838. His gravestone must be in error listing DoB as 31 March 1838.
