US Senator, 62nd Maine Governor, Presidential Cabinet Secretary. Born in Rumford, Maine, he served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was elected as Governor of Maine, serving from 1955 to 1959, when he resigned, having been elected as a Democratic Senator from Maine to the United States Senate. He served in that office from 1959 to 1980, during which he was the 1968 Democrat candidate for United States Vice President on the Hubert H. Humphreys ticket, and was a 1972 candidate for United States President. In 1970 he was appointed as United States Secretary of State by President Jimmy Carter, and served in that diplomatic post from 1980 until 1981.
