On Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009, Nan Watson Hough passed peacefully and painlessly at her home in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.

Nan was born in Atlanta on March 6, 1930, to John and Connie LeMaster. She obtained a bachelor's degree at Georgia State College for Women, majoring in education with a minor in art, and spent the next 40 years of her life as a passionate teacher and educator. She married (1952-1973) Ray Watson and taught in Georgia, Florida, France, Spain, Mississippi and Texas. Ray retired from the Air Force in 1970 and they moved to Fort Walton Beach where Nan taught middle school art, gifted geography and history in Valparaiso for the last 17 years of her career. In 1987 she was nominated Teacher of the Year. Nan may have retired from the Okaloosa County school system in 1988, but never lost her love of teaching. Her gift impacted many lives.

Nan had a great sense of humor and loved a good joke. In 2007, she completed and published her last project, "I Made God Laugh," a captivating 500 page bio of her life, family, travels and adventures.

Nan married Charles (Charlie) Hough in 1980. Nan loved to travel and Charlie became her beloved and constant traveling companion. They shared many Airstream adventures together. On Jan. 1, 2009, they celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary.

Nan was an active local community leader; one of the founders of Stage Crafters Little Theatre Group; an active member of AAUW (American Association of University Women); president of the local Parents Without Partners; member of the United Methodist Women's Organization; treasurer of the Pensacola chapter of the Airstream travel club; a gourmet cook, comedian, actor, director and published author. She was also an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church from 1970 to the present.
