John Martin was born in 1830 in Prussia, and emigrated before 1870.
Family notes say he was born in Hesse Kassel, and this information is reflected on the 1870 Erie Co. Ohio census as HesseCassel. John Martin settled in Ohio by 1870, and married Fredricka Stabbal, a daughter of Martin Stabbel, and Sophia Beckstine. Fredericka's family came from Kassel, Germany, according to grandmother's notes, and Martin Stabbal came to America with a brother around 1852, and the families arrived later.

John Martin and Fredericka settled in Lorain County, Ohio, and had at least ten children, before John died in 1896. The children are:
Adam Martin, born 1858, married a Mary.
John Charles Martin, born 1862, and died 1892.
Charles Martin, born 1866
Sophia Martin, born 1867, married George Rice
Elizabeth Martin, born 1870, married Philip J. Havice
George Martin, born 1873, married Louise Bruce
Emma Martin, born 1875, married Albert Miller
William Martin, born 1879, married Deva McCormick
Rosetta L. Martin, born 1883, married Clayton Steele

John Martin was a stone mason and may have known the Stabbal family from Hesse Cassel.
