On January 20, 1864, while absent from his command and at his home in Altamont, TN, Confederates dressed in Union uniforms rode rapidly up to his house and cried out, "Captain, the rebels are coming." As soon as he emerged from his house he was shot and instantly killed by the men that called to him.
His wife was Louisa E. Griswold Tipton born about 1841, married Oct 5, 1854 in Grundy County.
Father of Amous born about 1861 & Flora born about 1863.

Brother of: Joseph J., John, Martha who married Henry Serrer, William C. & James R. Tipton

This marker is broken in two. I located the upper half under a tree, with several other stones, a few feet away.
