Don Allen Moorhous died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009, at University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Neb., at the age of 78.
Don was born Feb. 11, 1930, in rural Culbertson, the son of Charles Fay and Minnie Margaretha (Leimbach) Moorhous. Don was baptized (1930) and confirmed (1945) at St. John's Lutheran Church in Culbertson, Neb.
Don graduated from Culbertson High School in 1949, and he married Thelma Frerichs at Peace Lutheran Church in McCook, Neb., on Jan. 7, 1953. They recently celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary.
Don served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1951 to 1954 during the Korean War. He was a decorated soldier and received the Korean War Medal, National Defense Medal, UN Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. After his honorable discharge, he worked for Bushman Construction Company in McCook.
When his father became ill, he had to leave the construction business to help his brothers with the family farm. Besides farming, Don worked part time at Tri-State Livestock (formerly known as the West Sale Barn). Don had to give up farming after his stroke in 1988.
Don was a three time gold medal winner in the state track meet competition. In 1947, he won the 880 yard run with a time of 2:03.2. In 1948 he repeated with a time of 2 minutes flat. In 1949, he won the gold in the 440-yard dash with a time of 51.4. He held the state record until 1967. In 1978, he was one of the three honorary referees at the Nebraska State High School Track and Field Championships at Omaha Burke High School.
Don's passions included his horses (Dolly & Molly), yard work and attending auctions, as well as watching Nascar races, professional bull riding, and Husker football. Don also enjoyed attending his grandchildren's activities.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, his sister, Laverne Olson and brothers, Melvin who was killed in action during World War II, Wayne and Delmer, and an infant grandson, Cody Miller.
Survivors include wife, Thelma Moorhous of Culbertson, four daughters, Pam Miller and husband, Mike of Bayfield, Colo., Pat Hagan of Culbertson, Neb., Donna Sauvage and husband, John of Selden, Kan., and Laurie Orr and husband, Jack of Lemoyne, Neb.; three sons, Mike Moorhous and wife, Darlene of Gillette, Wyo., David Moorhous of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Mark Moorhous and wife, Sherry of Culbertson, Neb., 19 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; sister, Bethene Swartz of Grand Junction, Colo.; and brother, Keith Moorhous of Culbertson, Neb.
Don is a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and is a member of the church council. Don was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 6219 where he served as the Post Commander from 2001 until his death.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Culbertson with the Rev. Brad Rick officiating. Interment with military honors will be in the Culbertson Cemetery at Culbertson, Neb.
