World War I United States Army Soldier. Lying that he was 18, he enlisted at age 12 under an assumed name in the United States Army after the United States entered World War I, making him the youngest soldier to serve from American during the war. Serving as a regimental courier, he was wounded and gassed during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in 1918. When he was discharged he was 14 years old.
