Nuremberg Judge. Born in Stowe Township, Pennsylvania, he was lawyer in Pittsburgh, in the 1920s and was elected to the State Legislature as a Republican in 1928. During the 1930s, he was serving as an officer in the US Navy Reserves and as a judge in courts of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. When World War II broke out, he went on active duty with the Navy, rose to the rank of Rear Admiral and served as military general of Sorrentine Peninsula in Italy. After the war, he was noted for serving as the presiding judge for the Einsatzgruppen Trial in US Military Court at Nuremberg, Germany. In 1951, he returned to the United States, was elected as a justice to the State Supreme Court in Pennsylvania and served until his death at age 71. He also wrote sixteen books related to his judgment cases and career.
