Downing Talmadge Middleton, 82, born 20 Apr 1894, of Hortense, passed away early Thursday morning, 9 Dec 1976, in Pierce County Nursing Home in Blackshear following a brief illness. He had been in declining health for some time.
A native and lifelong resident of Hortense, he was a son of the late William Dillworth Middleton and Martha Matilda Horton Middleton. His wife, Mary Frances Roberson Middleton, preceded him in death.
A member of Hortense Wesleyan Methodist Church, he was also a retired merchant and timberman, and had been active as a member of Patterson Lions Club until ill health forced his retirement. He was a veteran of World War I, having served in the U.S. Army.
Survivors are a daughter, Beth M. Phillips of Wallace, NC; two sisters, Cora Yoder of Vanwyck, SC, and Jewel Howard of Folkston; three grandchildren, and other relatives.
Services were at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Hortense Wesleyan Church with Rev. R. C. Mathis officiating. Burial was in Hortense Cemetery.
Clough-Pearson Funeral Home of Blackshear was in charge of arrangements.
