Amos served as Amos V. Nickerson in Co. I, 179th NY Infantry in the Union army during the Civil War. In New York he was known as Amos VanBuren Nickerson. There he married his first wife, Lucy Emily (Ross) Nickerson.

When Amos left New York after the Civil War and moved to Indiana, he started spelling his name as Nixon and married Lucy Frances (Rose) Nixon. At the end of his life, while he was known as Amos V. Nixon in Cherry Grove, he received a pension for his service during the Civil War, that pension being under his name in New York, Amos V. Nickerson.

Amos had a much older sister who married Jacob Rockefeller, the uncle of John D. Rockefeller. As a child Amos lived in the same town as John D. Rockefeller. He once reported that his earliest recollection of seeing a baby as a child was when he saw John D. Rockefeller, who was three years younger than Amos.

At Amos' funeral the minister told that when the congregation of the church in Cherry Grove wanted to build a new church, Amos wrote to John D. Rockefeller, identified himself, and asked if John D. Rockefeller would send money to help build the church, which he did.
