Alfredo Salafia was a professor of chemistry and gained recognition for his expertise in embalming in the early 1900's.

He embalmed a two-year-old child, Rosalia Lombardo in early December 1920 in Palermo, Sicily. She lies in a glass topped, sealed coffin in Palermo, Siclily on display looking remarkably as she did at the time of her death. She can be seen as a part of the Capuchin friary catacombs (Cemitero dei Cappuccini) in Palermo, Siclily, which is open to the public.

It was believed that when Salafia died his embalming techniques were lost with him. A niece of his second wife had his documents and journals and his formula was among them. It will make an enormous impact on the way embalming is done now.

The Museum of Funeral Customs in Springfield, Illinois was used to recreate Prof. Salafia's home and laboratory during a fiming of a National Geographic documentary about him, the Capuchin Monks and little Rosalia.

This documentary aired in early February 2009. Hopefully more information will be available concerning the life of this truly fascinating man.

I wish to thank Cav. David M. Gratta for sponsoring this memorial.

I wish to thank Rui Chiu for her kindness of giving me the name of the place of this man's burial.

I would also like to thank the man that gave some insight to my memorial and further searching myself to find that he was not a Dr. and also the year of his death, I found the birth date and the month and day of his death.

PLEASE DO NOT SUGGEST CORRECTIONS IN A TOKEN BEING LEFT. THIS IS A MEMORIAL TO A PERSON THAT HAS PASSED AND THEY SHOULD BE TREATED WITH RESPECT. PLEASE EDIT OR REMOVE YOUR TOKEN. LEAVE A MESSAGE ON MY BIO. PAGE WITH SUGGESTIONS.

(I have received information that Mr. Salafia ran a funeral home in NY. Also about the myth that his embalming practices were lost with him. In my memorial I stated that his techniques were found. I will research about Salafia running a funeral home in NY before I edit my memorial.)
