In 1873 Melissa Shisler married William Parrish as his second wife. They were farmers in Jackson Twp., near the Blue Creek United Brethren Church and the road where they lived was named Parrish Road for them.
After her husband's death in 1902 of Typhoid Fever, Melissa reared her four children alone and ran the farm as well. She owned a large flock of sheep that had to be sheared, a large orchard to be tended, a herd of cows from which she sold butter, milk and cream, and a large flock of chickens from which she sold the eggs, not to mention all the fields to be planted, cultivated and harvested...

...Not only did she take care of her own place, but helped her children at canning and butchering time, weaving carpets for them, and even healing their chidlren with her herb medicines when often the only local doctor could not. She gave of herself to whomever was in need of help and thus the world was a better place because of her.

Records showing her birthdate as 2 Feb. 1848 and 1849 exist, but the first is taken from the Old Shisler family Bible and believed to have been recorded by her mother Rebecca, and is considered the correct year.

(The above information was taken from a family history compiled by Melissa's grand-daughter, Irene.)
