FS continues: "In Smyrna (Izmir) there are a lot of graves preserved of British and Dutch merchants. . . .
"The Van Lenneps are a well-known, distinguished family. In the 19th century the Dutch King William I offered them ennoblement. Being real aristocrats they declined the honour. If they had accepted, they would have received the designation ‘jonkheer'/'jonkvrouwe' and that isn't a title. Just like the British ‘esquire' behind names. They were not the only aristocrats who refused such ‘second-class nobility'. Adele's grandfather Daniel Jean De Hochepied (1727-1796) was a real nobleman. (See for more details his Memorial #33658860). The text on his stone is in Latin as well. (I added a transcription.)"
Comment by Wilma Spice, who added the photo of Adele van Lennep: "As far as I know, I am not related to Adele van Lennep, but she and my great-great-grandparents (Rev. Josiah Brewer and his wife, Emilia Ann Field Brewer) were close friends in Smyrna (now Izmir). "Adele" was a name that the Brewers chose for one of their daughters (Mary Adele Brewer, who always went by the name of "Adele"), in honor of Adele van Lennep. Later, the "Adele" name was passed down to my mother. The photo of Adele van Lennep was given to Mary Adele Brewer by Edward James van Lennep, Adele van Lennep's grandson, and was preserved in the family photo album of my grandmother."
Adele van Lennep died at Sedikoy, near Smyrna (now Izmir), Turkey.
