Hubert Eugene Chance Family

The Hubert and Anna Louise Draper Chance family represent three generations of school teachers. Hubert, retired after forty-three years teaching (b. 6-26.1916, Putman County), is the son of Mandus and Myrle Edistina Hurst Chance. Hubert graduated from Brookville High School in 1934, Central Normal College at Danville in 1935, and received his bachelors' degree from Ball State University in 1942 and his masters' degree from Ball State University in 1947. He taught in Franklin, Henry, Delaware and Rush Counties, and at Havens, Graham Annex and Rushville Elementary Schools in Rushville. He served twenty-seven months during World War II in the Navy SeaBees and was in the South Pacific for fifteen months. He is a member of Phoenix F&AM Lodge, local, state and national Retired Teacher's Associations, and the Main Street Christian Church in Rushville.

Hubert and Anna Lou Draper were married at Brookville on May 1, 1940 which was his parents' twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. Hubert and Anna Lou have lived at 917 North Main Street, Rushville for thirty-seven years.
Anna Louise Draper Chance (b. December 1, 1917, Rush County), is the daughter of Osro M. and Mae Plummer Draper. Anna Lou graduated from Mays High School in 1935 and Ball State University in 1948. She retired after teaching for thirty years in Franklin, Wayne and Rush Counties and at Havens and Rushville elementary schools in Rushville. She is a member of local, state and national Retired Teacher's Associations, and the Main Street Christian Church.

Children of Hubert and Anna Lou are Beverly Sue (b. August 4, 1943, Henry County), who now lives at Reno, Nevada. She married John W. Kirkpatrick (b. November 29, 1964), son of Wendell and Jean Kirkpatrick of Rush County. She teaches elementary music at Reno.

Children of John and Beverly are Michael Alan (b. October 17, 1967, Corvallis, Oregon), and Jay Wendell (b. August 15, 1969, Walla Walla, Washington). Avonelle Faye (b. January 28, 1947, Henry County), now lives at Waukesha, Wisconsin. She has fourteen years' teaching experience but is not presently teaching. She married Mark William Leissring (b. August 23, 1975, Porter County), the son of Glenn and Jerry Leissring, Butler, Wisconsin.

Children of Mark and Avonelle are Sarah Kimberly (b. January 16, 1980, Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin), and Brad Kevin (b. January 9, 1982, Menomonee Falls).Monte Eugene (b. May 24, 1952, Rush County), lives at Bowling
Green, Kentucky. Monte has taught ten years in Puerto Rico and Kentucky. He is presently the band director at Warren Central High School, Bowling Green. He married Jenny Lynn Yazel (b. September 26, 1971), daughter of Edmund and Laura Jean Yazel of Rush County. Jenny teaches kindergarten at Bowling Green. Children of Monte and Jenny are Shannon Louise (b. April 27, 1972, Bowling Green), Nicole Elena (b. December 2, 1975, San Juan, Puerto Rico), and Brandon Carlyle (b. June 18, 1977, Bowling Green).
Parents of Hubert were Mandus Chance (b. October 20, 1891, Franklin County), who married Myrle Hurst in Putnam County on May 1, 1915. Mandus was a retired school teacher and county superintendent (d. April 30, 1976, Osgood, buried Maple Grove Cemetery, Brookville). Myrle (b. March 24, 1893, Putnam County), taught school before she was married (d. December 10, 1964, buried Maple Grove Cemetery, Brookville).

Other children of Mandus and Myrle are Dorotha Hurst Chance Ellerman (b. Febuary 26, 1918), retired teacher, and Helen Louise Chance Hand (b. December 15, 1919), retired teacher. Dorotha and Helen both married teachers. They had four children and three are teachers.

Parents of Ann Lou Chance were Osro M. Draper (b. July 22, 1894), son of James Oscar Draper (1862-1941), and Viola NelsonDraper (1864-1936). Osro was a Rush County farmer all his life and also did carpentry work. He married Mae Plummer on Febuary 18, 1917 in Rush County. He died January 18, 1969 in Rushville and is buried in Center Cemetery. Mae Plummer Draper was born June 11, 1892 in Hancock County and died January 14, 1980. She is buried Center Cemetery.

Other children of Osro and Mae are Virginia Joyce (Minchin) (b. May 15, 1921, Rush County), who has three children; two are school teachers and two have married school teachers; Wanda Lee (Oakes) (b. May 18, 1930, Rush County), who married James Leonard Oakes from New York on December 22, 1950. Wanda has five children and one is a teacher. Wanda has lived in Lyndonville, New York, all her married life.

Grandparents of Hubert were James (1854-1933), and Sarah Jane Warner Chance (1854-1925). They lived on a farm near Laurel, Franklin County, and are buried at Bound Cemetery near Laurel. James (1861-1924), and Edistina Williams Hurst (1868-1942), lived at Cloverdale, Putnam County, and are buried at Cloverdale. He owned a hardware store in Cloverdale.

Maternal grandparents of Anna Lou were James Oscar (1862-1942), and Millie Viola Nelson Draper (1864-1936). They farmed near Arlington; are buried in Arlington Cemetery.

Paternal grandparents were William Greenville (1859-1934), and Hattie White Plummer (1864-1895); he was a fruit tree salesman. They are buried at Greenfield Cemetery, Hancock County.
