Lake City - Nellie Evelyn Doke Dukes, 94, of Lake City, died Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at Willow Brook Assisted Living Facility, following a brief illness.
Nell was born in Bland, Florida (near Alachua), January 16, 1920, to the late Carl and Daisy Mae [Edwards] Doke and had been a resident of Lake City since 1950. She graduated from Alachua High School in 1938 and married Neal Dukes, August 20, 1939. Together they spent the early years of their marriage in the Worthington Springs, Florida area. Soon afterward, Neal entered World War II and upon returning home, and completing college, they moved to Lake City where they raised their sons. Nell was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. Additionally, she belonged to the Beta Sigma Phi sorority, DAR and the UDC. She was once awarded the Columbia County Fair, Volunteer of the Year Award. She loved genealogy and was very active in the Dukes family reunion.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Daisy Doke; sisters, Hazel (Ben) Mclean, Sybil (John) Shipp, Joyce (Bobby) Riherd; brother in law, Chester Ellis.
Survivors include her sons, Kay (Barbara) Dukes and Andy Dukes both of Lake City, FL and Eric (Thedas) Dukes of Atlanta, GA; grandsons, Bryan, Jeff, and Matt (Tammy) Dukes all of Lake City, FL; granddaughter, Erica (Frank) Dukes-Wooding of Baton Rouge, LA; great grandchildren, Amy and Bentley Dukes of Lake City, FL; sisters, Sue Ellis of Melbourne, FL, and Clair (Duke) Ellington of Zellwood, FL; brother, Kent (Barbara) Doke of Bland, FL.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 27, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church of Lake City with Pastor Jeff Tate officiating. Interment will follow in Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday evening, December 26, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 973 South Marion Avenue, Lake City, FL. 32025.
