John Richard Gabler





John Richard Gabler, 78, Overland Park, KS passed away Saturday, February 7, 2009 at his home. He was born Oct. 2, 1930 in Kansas City, MO to Frederick and Dora (Knake) Gabler. He graduated from Shawnee Mission North High School in 1949. Following graduation, John was drafted by the New York Yankees. He retired from baseball and moved back to Kansas to work with his father and brother at Gabler's Nursery. John was a member of Overland Park Lutheran Church, Kansas Baseball Hall of Fame in Wichita and the Nurseryman Association. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Frederick Gabler, Jr. Survivors include his wife, Shirley (Knowlton) Gabler; children and their spouses, Cynthia and Chip Anthony, Karen and Jeff Bowden all of Overland Park, KS, Johnna and Mitch Simmons, Overbrook, KS, Fritz and Terri Gabler, Stilwell, KS and Patti and Bill Nigro, Overland Park, KS; sister-in-law, Charlotte Gabler, Overland Park, KS; and 10 grandchildren, Jake, Ryan, Tyler, Connor, Kelsey, Samantha, Fritz Jr., Emily, Josie and Courtney.

Visitation and Services

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11 at the Overland Park Lutheran Church; burial in the Monticello Cemetery, Shawnee, KS. Friends may call from 6-8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee.
Baseball Player

John was signed by the New York Yankees as a free agent in 1949 when John was 18 years old. He played for the minors until September 18, 1959 when John pitched his debut game for the Yankees. In 1961 he was drafted by the Washington Senators, playing his final Major League game on September 17, 1961. John continued to play for the minors until 1962. John's baseball career consisted of 3 seasons in the majors and 13 seasons with the minors. He didn't play baseball from 1952 to 1953 during which he served in the Korean War. He was conducted into the Kansas Baseball Hall of Fame in 1986.
