He was the son of John Laub (born 1778) and Barbara Ressler Laub. On February 28, 1862, he enlisted as a private in Company E, Pennsylvania 107th Infantry Regiment. He was mustered out on July 5, 1862. His grandfather, John Laub (born 1740 in Germany), was a private in the company of Captain Jacob Klotz with Colonel Matthias Stough’s Battalion of the Flying Camp Company of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania Military during the Revolutionary War.
