Reuben served as a Private with the 1st Delaware Infantry, Company H during the Civil War.

Private Ruben Kesinger was wounded in the arm at the battle of Antietam/Sharpsburg on September 17th 1862. In the summer of 1863, Private Kesinger was sent to Carver Hospital, where he would die in ward 11 on September 1st 1863 of Chronic Diarrhea. Private Kesinger would be buried on September 2nd at 9 a.m.
