The founder of the Dorrance family in America was Rev. Samuel Dorrance, a Scotch Presbyterian clergyman, who came from Ireland to this country about the year 1722. He was born in 1685; graduated from Glasgow University in 1709; was pastor of a church in Voluntown, Conn., upward of forty years and died November 12, 1775, at the age of ninety years. His wife was Elizabeth Smith, who died in 1750.
Rev. Samuel Dorrance and his wife Elizabeth Smith Dorrance had seven children: Gershom b. 1727, John b. 1733, George b. 1735, Sarasana b. 1738, Samuel b. 1740, James b. 1743, Lemuel b. 1746
