Winnie P. Peoples, 82, a long time Carthage resident, passed away at 7:23 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009, at McCune-Brooks Hospital. She was born on Jan. 16, 1927, in Crane, Mo., and was the daughter of the late A. M. "Mac" Smith and Josephine (Gipson) Smith. She was a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a homemaker. Winnie was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church, of Carthage. Winnie and Raymond Peoples was married on Oct. 19, 1945, in Columbus, Kan. He survives. Other survivors include one son, David Peoples and wife, Mary; one daughter, Judy Pittman and husband, Tom, all of Carthage; three grandchildren, Eric Peoples and wife, Candie, of Carthage, Brandon Peoples and wife, Brandy, of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Brittany Pittman, of Carthage; four great-grandchildren, Audri, Brantley, Byron and Clay; two brothers, Claude Smith and wife, Judy, of Hackett, Ark., and Clyde Smith and wife, Marilyn; and two sisters, Minnie Hance, of Berien Springs, Mich., and Joann Baker and husband, Leaond, of Carthage. She was preceded in death by one brother, James Smith; two sisters, Alvie and Shirley; and one granddaughter, Tamara Pittman. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at Ulmer Funeral Home Chapel in Carthage, with burial in Carterville Cemetery. Visitation was Friday, Feb. 6, at the funeral home. Contributions may be given to the Fellowship Baptist Church in care of Ulmer Funeral Home. Arrangements are under direction of Ulmer Funeral Home.
