Mary E. Gilbert of Mitchell, IN, died Wednesday, July 22, 1998, at the Mitchell Manor Living and Rehab Center. Born on February 5, 1920, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Howard and Katie (Worthington) Miller. She married Joseph M. Gilbert on April 19, 1941, and he survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Janice A. Ratkovich of Mitchell, IN; two sons: Terry Ray Gilbert of Columbus, IN, and Jackie D. Gilbert of Mitchell, IN; four sisters: Helen Denton of Shelbyville, IN, Alberta Lerch of Canton, OH, Charlotte Stevens of San Diego, CA, and Margurite Kinder of Anderson, IN; seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Patty Jo Tirey; one son, Daniel Lee Gilbert; and three brothers: Cecil, Gordon, and Derby Miller.
She worked as a seamstress and was a homemaker. She was a member of Jacob Finger United Methodist Church, the Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250 Auxiliary and the Order of Eastern Star No. 503. She was a 1938 graduate of Mitchell High School and she and her husband decorated the stage for Mitchell's annual Persimmon Festival for many years.
Services for Mary Gilbert will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 25th, at Chastain Funeral Home with the Rev. Jack Shake officiating. Burial will follow in Mitchell Cemetery.
