Melvin worked at Caterpillar Co., Peoria, Il., until he took a mediacl retirement in the early 1960's due to a heart problem. He m.Sherry Marlene Irons 23 July 1960 in Canton, Fulton, Il. They bought property in Middlegrove. Lived in the old 2-story house and raised Sherry's children there. Eventually tore down that house and had a home built for them in it's place
They purchased a 5th wheel motor home and traveled, eventually settling on Padre Island in Texas, and traveling back and forth from there to Illinois.
Sherry and her brother Kenneth Everett Irons, Jr. were only able to see each other a few hours each year, as Kenneth's grandmother, Alta Faye Harris Elliott did not drive or own a car.
When Kenneth was discharged from the Navy in Winter of 1965/Spring of 1966 he lived with them in Middlegrove for three months prior to his returning to California.
Melvin and Sherry passed away within the same month, and both are interred in Oak ridge Cemetery in Farmington, Fulton, Il.
