Ira Knapp was born in De Kalb County, Illinois on December 8, 1847 to Stephen Jackson Knapp and Susan Abney Knapp. In early childhood he moved with his parents to Benton County, Iowa where he grew to manhood. On December 23, 1866 in Benton County, Iowa, he married Nancy Ann Tilbury. They had five children: Lillia M. who died in infancy, Mary Elizabeth Kauth of Greeley, Colorado, Lewis Andrew Knapp, Lennie Leota Sellman of Keota, Iowa, and Mabel Clair Chapin of Bassett, Nebraska. He was a farmer and carpenter. Ira was sick for the last year of his life and had gone to Colorado that summer. He died August 29, 1915 in Greeley, Colorado, and was buried in the Olive Branch Cemetery in Mills, Nebraska.
