Cedar Rapids Public Library newspaper archive, The Coe College Cosmos volXXXVI no 15 issued Thursday January 26, 1927.Manifold Is Victim Of Drowning During Christmas Vacation
A tragedy occurred Friday, December 24, when Robert Manifold, a member of the junior class, was drowned while skating on Cedar Lake. Manifold had not been able to go to his home for the holidays. His father is a Presbyterian minister in Plover.
The fatal accident occurred about 3:30 in the afternoon. Manifold had been skating near the Milwaukee tracks on the east side of the lake, when he broke through the thin ice and went down in ten feet of water. Louis Sanders and Leo Stanley, who were skating a short distance from Manifold, rushed to his aid. Sanders dived in after Manifold and in attempting to rescue him narrowly escaped being drowned himself.
Other skaters and spectators arrived on the scene, but the ice was so thin that they could not get close to the hole where he went down. The body was later recovered, and artificial respiration and the lungmotor were used but proved futile. The funeral was held in Plover on the Tuesday morning following the tragedy.
Manifold had been prominent in scholastic attainments while at Coe. He was a member of the Freshman Tenth and held an enviable scholastic record at the time of his death. He was an affilliate member of the Central Park Presbyterian Church.
