Isaac Singer was the inventor of the Singer Sewing Machine and Founder of the Singer Sewing Machine Company, not the first sewing machine invented, but the best known and most innovative. Actually his first invention and patent was in 1839, of a machine that drilled through rock. And inventing wasn't his primary career, he was an Actor, and formed a troupe as the "Merritt Players." They would go on tour. His stage name was Isaac Merritt. He held various jobs, working in a Press Shop in New York City in 1835, and in a Print Shop in Fredericksburg, Ohio, in 1844, then a Woodshop in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1846. By 1860 he had fathered and reconized 18 children by four different women. His first wife was Catharine Maria Haley who he married at the age of 19, when she was only 15. They had two children together, a son, William Singer, and a daughter, Lillian. And a longtime girlfriend/commonlaw wife, Mary Ann Sponsler, they had a son together, Isaac Singer Jr. Isaac, known for his many affairs, and bigomy, and domestic violence, abusive towards some of his women and children, then started courting Mary McGonigal, who eventually had five children by him. In 1860 he bought a mansion on Fifth Avenue in New York City, becoming a successful businessman and financially wealthy. I.M. Singer and Company expanded into the European Market, establishing a factory in Clydebank, Scotland, near Glasgow. His company becoming the first American-based multinational corporation, with agencies in Paris and Rio De Janeiro. After Mary Ann Sponsler had him arrested for domestic violence, he bonded out, and being disgraced, fled for London, England. He had another Lady Friend in Paris, France, where he resided for awhile, Isabella Eugenie Sommerville, they married on June 13th, 1863. Also in 1863 he became less involved in the Company he founded, but served as a member on the Board of Trustees and was a major stockholder. He built a large house, called the Oldway Mansion, on the Devon Coast, where he spent his last days. He died at the age of 63, of an infection of the heart and inflammation of the windpipe. He left an estate of 13-14 million, and two wills, divided up between his family members.Isaac Merritt Singer was an American inventor, actor, and entrepreneur.
