Leonard Skaar, 72, died Wednesday, March 13, 2002 at his rural Thief River Falls home.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 16, at 2 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls with Rev. Tim Bauer officiating. Ida Nordvall was the organist, and the soloist was Van Swanson. Casketbearers were Jerry Nelson, Don Barron, Ed Sisler, Al Gustafson, Bryan Malone, Daniel R. Johnson, Francis Anderson, and Corey Skjerven. Military honors were accorded by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2793 and Ecklund-Holmstrom American Legion Post 117 Color Guard. Interment was in Park Ridge Cemetery in Thief River Falls with Green Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Leonard Duane Skaar was born on September 5, 1929 in Norden Township of Pennington County, the son of Ole Andrew and Olga Pauline (Nelson) Skaar. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls. He attended a rural school and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1947. From October 22, 1953 to October 21, 1955, Leonard served in the U.S. Army. After being discharged from the military, Leonard spent the remainder of his life farming.

He was a member of the Thief River Falls American Legion Post and enjoyed curling, raising cattle, and visiting with friends on the family farm.

Leonard is survived by four sisters, Oline Markine of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Elsie Fairbank of Tucson, Ariz., Faythe Kinnunen of Menagha, and Martha Parsons of Yelm, Wash.; two brothers, Andrew of Thief River Falls and Erven Skaar of Cambridge; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Thelma Terrian.
