Elsie Hope Sturgeon McMurray, age 91 of Graham, formerly of Breckenridge, died Thursday, January 29, 2009, at Horizon Bay in Graham. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, February 3rd, at Necessity Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Westmoreland officiating. Burial followed in the Necessity Cemetery under the direction of Morehart Mortuary. Visitation was held from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday evening, February 2nd.
Elsie Hope was born on June 1, 1917, in Stephens County, Texas, to parents, Robert Ellis Hope and Willie Ellen Sullivan Hope. She grew up in the Necessity Community and graduated from Breckenridge High School in 1934. Elsie later attended the Famous Writers School. She married James Wiley "J.W." Sturgeon on April 11, 1936, in Archer City, Texas. The Sturgeons made their home in Archer City where Elsie was very active in the community. She was a feature writer for the Archer County News for several years. Elsie was also a member of the Faith Memorial Baptist Church where she served as the church organist and was active in the Women's Missionary Union.
In 1971, Elsie and J.W. moved to Breckenridge. For more than 10 years Elsie wrote "Kaleidoscope," a column published in the Breckenridge American that chronicled life in Stephens County. She was also the women's editor and contributed to the Union Hill News column. Elsie was a member of First Baptist Church of Breckenridge where she was still active in the Women's Missionary Union. Later she became a member of Necessity Baptist Church where she served as the church organist.



Following the death of her husband, J.W., in January 2002, Elsie moved to Merrill Gardens Retirement Center, later Horizon Bay, in Graham. Elsie enjoyed her life in Graham, where she maintained a very active lifestyle. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Graham. After moving to Graham, Elsie met E.C. McMurray and later married him on March 15, 2003. Elsie was very dedicated to her writing, but also enjoyed doing her share of work on the family's ranch. She also loved to play the organ, travel and knit.
Elsie was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, J.W. Sturgeon; one son, Robert Wiley Sturgeon; two daughters, Martha Yvonne Sturgeon and Glenda Ruth Sturgeon Eustace; one grandson, Todd Wiley Eustace; one great-granddaughter, Laine Brooke Taton; one brother, Ray Hope; and one sister, Kathleen Fambrough.
Elsie is survived by her husband, E.C. McMurray of Graham; two grandchildren, Lorrie Lewis of Denver, Colo., and Boyd Eustace and wife, Lucy of Baltimore, Md.; 10 great-grandchildren, Kirsten and Zachary, both of Charlottesville, Va., Matthew and James, both of Baltimore, Md., Lyndie, Jake, Josh, Cameran, Wiley and Chaney, all of Denver, Colo.; two sisters, Fay Parks and husband, Ted and May Ball and husband, Gilbert; two step-children, Martha Wofford and husband, Louis of Dallas and Janna Boyd and husband, Crosby of Midland; three step-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Emily, Mark and Mac; and three great-great grandchildren.
