Lemuel Garner Adams (L.G.) died early Thursday morning, February 5, 2009, at the State Veteran's Home in Jackson, Mississippi, from complications related to Parkinson's disease. He was 84 years old.
Mr. Adams was born in Macon, Mississippi, the seventh of nine children born to the late Garner and Sallie Pagan Adams. He was a veteran of WWII and loved his country. He graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1950 and settled in Summit where he lived until 2005 when he and his wife moved to Flowood, Mississippi. He retired in 1988 from the Mississippi State Tax Commission. Mr. Adams was a devoted father and member of the First Southern Methodist Church in Summit, where he attended and served as deacon and trustee for many years.
Mr. Adams is preceded in death by a brother, Peyton Adams (Pat) of Summit and sisters, Grace Hunter of South Carolina, Frances Lawhorn of Hernando, Mississippi, and Milton Singley and Margaret Covington of Columbia, Mississippi.
Mr. Adams is survived by his beloved wife, Eloise Burnett Adams, originally of the Ted Community in Smith County, and his children, Sandra Adams Smith and her husband, Thomas P. Smith of Southern Pines, Lemuel Garner Adams III (Lem) and his wife, Marcia Robinson Adams of Brandon and Natchez, James Noel Adams (Jim) and his wife, Jo May Adams of Brandon. He is also survived by his six grandchildren, Adam Smith, Jake Adams, Whitty Adams McLeod, Lem Adams IV, Bailey Adams, and Libby Adams Newell; two step-grandchildren Meredith May Roth, and Greg May; and by eight great-grandchildren with another expected soon. Surviving him also are three sisters, Libby Sprecher of Macon, Mississippi, Martha Patty of Hernando, Mississippi, and Lois DiDomenico of La Plata, Maryland, and numerous nephews and nieces scattered across the U.S.
As they fondly remember the patriarch of their family and celebrate his life and passing into eternity to be with his Heavenly Father, family members will receive friends today from 5-7 pm at Ott and Lee funeral home in Brandon and again at 10 am on Saturday morning, February 7, 2009, prior to the funeral at 11 am. A graveside service will follow in Summit at Woodlawn Cemetery at 2 pm. Afterward, an opportunity for friends to visit with the family will be held at the home of Steven and Julia Adams of 323 Freeman Road in Summit.
