Oren W. Atterberry, 83, son of J. Wesley and Pearl Wiseman Atterberry, was born Feb. 1, 1920, near Bloodland. He died Jan. 23, 2004, at Texas County Memorial Hospital in Houston.
He married Dorothy McCoy June 21, 1943. They had two children, Judy and Donna. His wife preceded him in death.
Mr. Atterberry spent most of his life in the Plato area except 1940 to 1941, when he was a laborer in the CC camps at Duke. He joined the U.S. Army and served from Oct. 21, 1941, until Jan. 15, 1946. He received a Bronze Star and Good Conduct Medal.
He married Isabelle Anderson Dec. 2, 1950. They had five children.
For the last 53 years, he was a livestock farmer. He drove a school bus for many years. He enjoyed coon hunting and spending time outdoors.
He was baptized in the Big Piney River by Cecil Welch and was attending New Life Ministries as long as his health permitted.
Surviving are his wife of the home; his children, Judy Reid of Lebanon, Donna McElfresh of Bowling Green, Ky., Donald Atterberry of Bucyrus, Peggy Manier, Ronnie Atterberry and Lee Atterberry of Plato and Gene Atterberry of St. Clair; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were Jan. 26 at the Long Hollow Cemetery with Judy Routh and the Rev. Gary Garner officiating under the direction of Evans Funeral Home.
