Nellie Gertrude was one of twelve children of Josiah Wasson and Permelia Sandlin. From Alabama, the Wassons left for Arkansas when Nellie was a child, living in Logan County. A few years later they migrated again, this time to the area of Porum in what was then the Cherokee Nation.
Nellie married Charley Howard in 1901. Together they raised nine children while farming in southern Muskogee County and neighboring Le Flore County.
