Charles E. "Bud" Gray, 83, died at his home in Pleasant Hill on January 26, 2009. He had been in declining health for about a year.
Bud was born on February 25, 1925, in Cass County, Missouri, the son of James D. and Mamie V. Rollins Gray.
He married Lilyun Rosenbalm Gray on April 22, 1947 in Leavenworth, Kansas. She preceded him in death on July 5, 1997.
He attended both Crossroads and Brush College schools. He served in the Army during World War II. He retired from Stahl's Specialty Co. after 33 years of employment as a machinist.
Bud was a member of the Pleasant Hill Fire Department from 1947 until 1991. He served as Fire Chief from 1985 until 1991.
He was preceded in death by his wife Lilyun Gray; parents James D. and Mamie Rollins Gray; two brothers, Bill and Bob Gray; and one grandson, Logan Gray.
He is survived by two sons, Darrell Gray and wife Susie, Alan "Sam" Gray and wife Kristine, all of Pleasant Hill; two sisters, Frances Redwine and Roberta Graham, both of Pleasant Hill; and one granddaughter, Jody Gray; and many other relatives and friends.
His funeral was held under the direction of Wallace Funeral Home on January 29, 2009. Rev. Wyatt Shanks officiated. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
Casket bearers were Dean Gray, Mike Gray, Mark Gray, Bill Dinges, David Redwine and David Kosfeld.
Honorary bearers were Raymond Haile, Max Schmoll, Fred Mitchell and Greg Hayes.
