DUERKES, Robert Sr., 85, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, March 14, 2006.Born February 19, 1921, in Redbank, N.J., Robert served in the Navy during World War II on one of America's Liberty ships as a signal corpsman, which began his love for ham radio for the rest of his life. In 2003 he was awarded a plaque as the "Ham of the Year" for his outstanding service to the community. Robert retired from the U.S. post office in 1986. He is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy Agnes; son, Robert John Jr.; and grandchildren, Roy Williams Thomas III, Laura Marie Columbo, Mark Anthony Thomas, Robert Wayne Thomas, Kristen Marie Johansen, Christopher Sean Paul, James Albert and Michael Robert. He is also survived by two sisters, three brothers, six great-grand-children, and many other family and friends. Memorial services for Robert will take place 10 a.m. Friday, March 17.
