John W. Culler was a son of Thomas & Elizabeth (Boyles) Culler. He was born in Stokes County, North Carolina. John's first wife was Temperace Boyles, who died shortly after their marriage. John and Temperance had a daughter, Choney E. Culler, who was raised by her grandparents in Stokes County, North Carolina. After the death of his first wife John went to York County, Pennsylvania, and met and married Anna Mary Holland. After a few years the family moved to Greene County, Missouri.

John W. Culler, served in the Confederate States of America Army, during the Civil War. He listed his residence as Stokes County, North Carolina, and that he worked as a farmer. He enlisted at the age of 22, as a Private, in Company H, 53rd Regiment, North Carolina Infantry, on March 20, 1862.

In the 1885 Kansas census record, John and his family were living in Eureka, Greenwood County, Kansas. He was listed as J. W. Culler, a farmer, age 45 born in Virginia, his wife, Anna M. age 40 born in Pennsylvania, their children listed were; Charles T. age 17, Anna E. age 15, both born in Pennsylvania, and George W. age 13, Laura R. age 9, Mary M. age 5, and Samuel L. age 3, all born in Kansas.

In the 1900 census, John and his family were living in North Campbell Township, Greene County, Missouri. John was listed as John W. Culler age 60 born January 1840 in Virginia, his wife Anne M. age 56 born April 1844 in Pennsylvania, his children listed were, George W. Culler age 27 born April 1873 in Pennsylvania, Mary Culler age 20 born June 1879 in Kansas, and Samuel L. Culler age 18 born August 1881 in Kansas. It also stated that both John, parents were born in North Carolina.
