Wilma Jane Owens, loving mother and grandmother, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009, at Burke Hospice and Palliative Care in Valdese. She resided in Nebo before her health declined. Born Aug. 2, 1926 in McDowell County, she was the daughter of the late Ella Belle Vickers Ward and Garrett Ayers. Mrs. Owens retired from Coates America. She was a member of Nebo First Baptist Church in Nebo where she was a former Sunday school teacher and an AWANA worker. She was also a mentor at Nebo Elementary School. Children were her greatest love and joy. Mrs. Owens is survived by her children, Jane Hawkins of Monroe, JoAnne Pendegrass of Morganton, Steve Pendegrass and his wife, Betty, of Morganton and Melisa Womick and her husband, Jerry, of Nebo; five grandchildren; four great- grandchildren; a sister, Betty Lawing; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dallas David Owens Sr.; an infant daughter, Linda Kay Pendegrass; a brother, William Franklin Ward; and a sister, Thelma Ward. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. today at Nebo First Baptist Church. Burial will follow at McDowell Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. today at the church. At other times, the family will be at the home of Melisa and Jerry Womick, US 70, Nebo. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, 1721 Enon Road, Valdese, NC 28690. Wilma Jane Owens, loving Mother and Grandmother, passed away February 4, 2009 at Burke Hospice and Palliative Care in Valdese, NC.

She resided in Nebo before her health declined.

Born August 2, 1926 in McDowell County, she was the daughter of the late Ella Belle Vickers Ward and Garrett Ayers.

She was also preceded in death by her husband Dallas David Owens, Sr.; an infant daughter, Linda Kay Pendegrass; a brother, William Franklin Ward and a sister, Thelma Ward.
