Bonnie Maxine Merz, 88, of Satanta, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009, at Satanta District Hospital.

She was born July 29, 1920, in Grain Valley, Mo., to Walter P. and Mabel L. Shepherd Maxwell.

On Feb. 20, 1938, she married Arnold H. Merz in Tribune. In 1945, they moved from Garden City to Satanta, where she worked as an office nurse at a doctor's office, and was a lab and X-ray technician and hospital administrator for several years at Satanta District Hospital.

Mrs. Merz was a member of the United Methodist Church of Satanta, loved spending time with her family, crocheting and traveling the states with her husband, and was an avid KU fan and bowler. Her hobbies included working in her yard, and she won first place twice for Yard of the Month. She had been a resident of the Satanta Long Term Care Unit for five years.

Her husband died Dec. 25, 1983. She also was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Ralph, Shirley L. and Willard Maxwell; and two sisters, Marilyn King and Janice Edmonds.

Survivors include two sons, Richard A. "Dick" Merz of Satanta, and Donald L. Merz of Santa Fe, N.M.; a sister, Ruth Shobe of Lee Summit, Mo.; five grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Satanta, with the Rev. Kelvin Heitmann officiating. Burial will be at Dudley Township Cemetery, Satanta.
