Born July 6, 1921 in Decatur County, she was the daughter of Joseph and Mamie (Peters) Meer, both deceased.
Mrs. Akers lived the majority of her life on the farm. She spent many years volunteering at the Indiana High School Basketball Hall of Fame and the Henry County Memorial Hospital. She was an active member of the RST Club.
Survivors include three sons, Samuel Akers (and wife Vickie), Larry Akers and Donald J. Akers (and wife Denise), all of New Castle; six daughters, Carolyn Akers of Tampa, Fla., Susan (Mrs. Ed) Kirby of Linton, Donna K. (Mrs. Ray) Maddox of Muncie, Mary Jo Baker of Mooresville, Kathy (Mrs. Scott) Burge of Carthage, and Betty (Mrs. Steve) Hards of Greenfield; one sister, Ruth Jenkins of Indianapolis; 20 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Akers in 1983; one daughter, Teresa Akers in 1980, one grandson, Clayton Baker; one granddaughter, Kimberly Akers; three brothers, Harry, Clarence and Nobert Meer; and two sisters, Mabel Schwendenmen and Esther Schwegman.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Rose Catholic Church in Knightstown. Fr. Joe Rautenberg will officiate. Burial will follow in Rushville's Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home in Lewisville. Rosary Service will follow at 8 p.m.
