S/Sgt. Leo J. Malone was a member of the 47th Bombardment Squadron (Medium), 41st Bombardment Group, Seventh Air Force. He was killed on 22 January 1944 during a bombing mission when the B-25-G he was flying in was reportedly impacted by an explosion in another plane in the formation, and then shot down by Japanese fighter planes. Reportedly, six feet of the aircraft’s left wing was blown away by the nearby explosion. The crew managed to keep flying at low altitude over the ocean, but was then strafed by four Japanese fighter planes. With both engines on fire, the plane dove nose first into the water and exploded, with all crew members believed to be killed immediately. The last known position of the aircraft was approximately 10 miles southwest of Taroa, an island in the east of Maloelap Atoll in the Marshall Islands.

The members of the downed crew were:

1st Lt. Ralph C. Crume (Pilot)
2nd Lt. Charles D. Mellquist (Co-Pilot)
2nd Lt. Thomas F. McCarthy (Bombardier/Navigator)
S/Sgt. John M. Furey (Radio Operator/Gunner)
S/Sgt. Leo J. Malone (Engineer/Gunner)
S/Sgt. Calvin J. Renker (Armorer/Gunner)
