Harvey L. Jones, Sr. died Monday, February 2, 2009. Funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 7, 2009 at Culley's MeadowWood Riggins Road Chapel with interment to follow in Tallahassee Memory Gardens. Family will receive friends from 6 - 8 pm Friday in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Heart Association, 2851 Remington Green Circle, Suite C, Tallahassee, FL 32308.
Born in Waukeenah, FL Harvey was a lifelong Tallahassee resident. In his early years, he enjoyed fishing and hunting. Next to his family, racing was his passion. He raced 7 decades and drove his last race in 2002. He was inducted into the Jacksonville Racing Hall of Fame and the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame. He was classified as "A living Legend" in stock car racing in South Georgia and North Florida. Harvey retired from Centel Telephone Company after 37 years of service.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Hazel Howard Jones; sons, Harvey Leslie Jones, Jr., and David Howard Jones both of Tallahassee; his daughters, Lorita Zangas (husband, Lewis "Buster") of Pensacola, FL, Barbara Jean Bass (husband Charles), and Mary Jane Miller, both of Tallahassee; two sisters, Mary Connell (husband Kenneth) of Waukeenah and Virginia Taylor (husband Frank), of Tallahassee; seven grandchildren, John Hagin, Beth Hagin, Patty Byrd, Chris Jones, Rachel Arnold, Scott Bass and Katie Jones; and seven great grandchildren.
