Mary Jane King was the first of four children born to James Martin King (1866-1946) and his wife Heallon Mercia Beachum (1874-1930). She was likely named for her mother's sister, Mary Jane Beachum (1867-1910) who was married to her father's first cousin, Dulin Benson Stearns (1863-1962). D. B. and Mary Jane were the great grandparents of the writer.

Mary Jane King married Daniel Boger "Dan" Howell (1884-1960). He was a son of Hampton C. Howell and his wife Mary Jane Hudson, of Cabarrus County, NC. Mary Jane and Dan had seven children. She died of Bright's Disease, shortly after the birth of her last child.

The children of Mary Jane King and Dan B. Howell were: Luther Caldwell Howell (1908-1992), James Homer Howell (1910-1976), Ralph Emerson Howell (1912-1984), Julie Kathleen Howell (1915-1986, Mrs. Mendel), Charles Boger Howell (1918-1999), Joseph Harry Howell (1920-1982) and Mary Helen Howell (1923-2009, Mrs. Tedford).
