Willie Albert Weltz was born April 27, 1933, in Denison, Iowa, the son of Albert and Emma Weltz. He died Sunday, January 18, 2009, at the Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of seventy-five.
Willie was baptized in Christ on June 4, 1933, by Pastor Frese, and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, March 30, 1947. He received his education at rural schools and Zion Lutheran School. After completing his education he operated a caterpillar and did construction work. On January 27, 1953, Willie enlisted in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. He received his honorable discharge in January 1956 as a sergeant. He spent time in Japan, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and California, and participated in the atomic blast test in Nevada. Willie was the instructor of an International Rifle Range.
On April 6,1958, Willie was united in marriage to Janice Bahnsen at Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig. The couple farmed north of Denison for fifty-one years. To this union three sons were born, Terry, Alan and Rodney.
Willie enjoyed his stock cows and working at Rodney's Auction House. In his leisure time he enjoyed playing poker with his brothers-in-law and fishing with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed going to his grandchildren's sporting events. He was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Helen and Erna. Survivors include his wife Janice; his children: Terry and his wife Denise; Alan and his wife Kelly; and Rodney and his wife Sue; eight grandchildren: Staci, Tyler, Kelsey, Hollie, Lexus, Jacob, Michael and Matthew; and two great-grandchildren, Faith and Makenna; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, January 21, 2009, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. David Sewing officiated the service and graveside rites held at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. Organist Karen Kahl provided accompaniment for congregational hymns, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "God Bless Our Native Land," and hymns, "Nearer, My God, to Thee" and "How Great Thou Art" by soloist Larry Boeck. Serving as pallbearers were Dale Carstensen, Kyle Springer, Tyler Weltz, Steven Bumann, Nick Bahnsen and Bob Boehm. Military honors were by American Legion Post 8 of Denison. The family invited everyone to return to the church and join them for fellowship and lunch served by the Evening Guild. The Huebner Funeral Home of Denison was in charge of arrangements.
