He was a son of William Tate (circa 1745 Virginia-1820 Franklin Co., GA) and wife Elizabeth, said to be the daughter of Capt. Solomon Wood (some others also say she was a Caldwell).
He was born near Kings Mountain, Cleveland Co., N.C.
Some researchers list his grandfather as John Tate (1687-1769) who married Lucy (or Mary Waddy?), son of James Tate III (c1663-c1727) and Anne Waddy.
