Anthony R. DeMattei, age 88 of Newtown, died Saturday, January 31, 2009 at his home after a long illness. He was the husband of the late Anna (Leonardo) DeMattei. Anthony was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on April 3, 1920 a son of the late Giacomo and Virginia (Fusco) DeMattei. He attended Brooklyn Poly Tech and graduated from the University of Bridgeport with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Before his retirement, Mr. DeMattei was in charge of Latin American operations for the Berol Corporation and was instrumental in the building of what was the Eagle Pencil Co. Plant in Commerce Park, Danbury. A resident of Newtown since 1958, he was a Communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church and previously served on the Newtown Planning & Zoning Commission and the Board of Directors of Danbury Hospital. Mr. DeMattei is survived by a son, Anthony J. DeMattei and his wife Laura of New Fairfield; a daughter, AnneMarie DeMattei of Middlebury; two sisters, Lucille DeMattei of Foster, Mass., and Teresa Johnson of Clinton, Mass.; four grandchildren, James Reynolds of New Milford, Danae DeMattei of New Fairfield, Emmett Kinsella of Tampa, Fla., and Devin Kinsella of Middlebury and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 5, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. from the Honan Funeral home 58 Main St. Newtown and at 11 a.m. in St. Rose of Lima Church for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment in St. Rose Cemetery will be private. Friends may call at the Honan Funeral Home Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Memorial Donations maybe made to the American Heart Association, 1 Union St., Suite 301, Robbinsville, NJ 08691.
