Flora Ann (Nelson) Haynes, known in her neighborhood as "mama", passed away Tuesday, January 27, 2009, at her home, she was 69. Flora was born in Tuscaloosa, AL, to Leslie and Maggie (Pettaway) Nelson in 1939. She attended Scott High School and lived in Toledo most of her life.
Flora retired from the University of Toledo in 2003 after 30 years. Flora loved to raise roses and other rare types of flowers. She had the greenest of thumbs and could make any plant take root and grow. She also loved art and was very good at sketching and drawing. She was never extravagant and liked simple things and simple living.
Flora was preceded in passing by her parents, brother, Edward Nelson and husband, Hudson Haynes, a local contractor in 1981. Flora left to cherish her memory, four children, Gregory Nelson (Robin), Ibrahim Abdulrahim (Farida), Michael Haynes, and Maggie Harris (Greg) all of Toledo, OH; 19 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; sisters, Betty Dotson, Dorothy Hayes (Neman) and Patricia Allen-Murff (LeLand) all of Toledo, OH, Fannie Partee (John) of Memphis, TN, and Helen Nelson of Grand Rapids, MI; brothers, the Rev. Edward Dotson (Jackie) of Toledo, OH, Leslie Nelson Jr., Frank Nelson and Joseph Nelson of Grand Rapids, MI; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Friends and guests will be received Sunday, February 1, 2009 from 3-5 p.m. at the House of Day Funeral Home, 2550 Nebraska Avenue. Wake services will be Monday at 11 a.m. followed by funeral services at noon also at the House of Day Funeral Home. Interment Historic Woodlawn Cemetery.
