Joseph was the son of William & Sarah Kennedy. He graduated from St. Joseph's Catholic School in Enid in 1939. He served in the U. S. Army in the 30th Engineers during World War II. On 12/20/1941 he married Mary Louise Howland in Enid. They were the parents of four children.
