In World War II, James served in the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions, and was a veteran of the Battle of the Bulge. He remained in the Army after the war.

He married Army Nurse Corps Captain Margaret Kokayko about 1946, and was the father of three children.

James died while still on active duty in the Army, at the age of 44 years, 7 months and 23 days. He was survived by his wife, son and two daughters.
