KEARNEY D. BUSHONG MET DEATH WHILE ON DUTY
Kearney David Bushong, who would have been 23 years old today had he lived, one of three sons of Mr. and Mrs. Kearney Bushong of Eckford township in the service of their county, met his death in a Navy plane accident at
Lompco, California, early Friday morning. The remains are being shipped here for burial. Mr. and Mrs. Bushong were first informed of the tragedy by a brief telegram Saturday afternoon which simply stated that their son had been killed by "electric shock." No further word was received until this morning, when a letter came from the young man's commanding officer. This letter stated that Bushong and several other Navy men were helping to handle a Navy "lighter-than-air" ship about to take off from the Naval Auxiliary Air facility at Lompco. The weather was damp. An electric discharge from a "field line" high tension wire came in contact with the plane and sent a heavy electric shock through those in contact with it. The plane itself was not badly damaged. However, Bushong, and three other men were killed by the shock and a fifth man was badly injured. Three officers, including a Navy doctor, reached the scene almost immediately and medical help from a nearby army hospital was sent, but nothing
could be done to revive the four men who were apparently instantly killed. It is not known when the body will arrive here. It will be taken to the Kelser Funeral Home, and funeral arrangements will be announced later. Bushong was born 16 August 1920, in Mt. Pleasant MI, the son of Kearney and Della Bushong. The family came to Marshall in 1922. Kearney Jr. attended the Marshall schools, but finished high school at Harbor Springs MI where he lived for three years with an aunt, Miss Kitty Bushong. He enlisted in the Navy, 10 December 1942, and for the past six months had been stationed at Santa Ana CA. He had the rank of aviation machinist's mate, third class, at the time of his death. He was married on 16 June of this year to Miss Vera Jean Moog, of Coldwater MI, the marriage
taking place at Kingman AZ. Surviving besides his wife and parents are three brothers, Staff Sgt. Clarence E. Bushong, now stationed in Panama; Pfc. Otto C. Bushong of Fort Ord CA; and Craig C. Bushong, at home; three sisters, Mrs. Beatrice O'Dell of Albion MI, Ruth and Myrona Darlene Bushong, both at home. The Bushong family now resides in the Wilder district, in Eckford Township, only a short distance from the Wilder school.
