MRS. IRBY DEAD
FUNERAL SERVICES FOR A PIONEER WERE HELD TODAY
Mrs. S. W. Irby, Who Died Saturday Night, Had Lived Here Many Years, Coming Here in 1884.
Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock for Martha Irby, wife of S. W. Irby, 414 South Penn avenue, who died Saturday night at 7:35 o'clock following a short illness of pneumonia. Mrs. Irby was born in Indiana, May 21, 1837, where she grew to womanhood, later coming to Kansas after her marriage to S. W. Irby on Dec. 31, 1856, and homesteading on a farm ten miles southwest of Independence. Thirty-six years ago they moved to this city and have resided here since that time.
Mrs. Irby numbered her friends by her acquaintances and will be remembered for her loving kindness and thoughtfulness of others. She was a devoted member of the First Methodist church, and until her illness was active in all work of the church.
Had Mrs. Irby lived until the last day of this month, she and her husband, who is now seriously ill, would have celebrated their sixty sixth wedding anniversary.
Besides her husband Mrs. Irby is survived by six daughters; Mrs. W. M. Clary, Lenapah; Mrs. Sarah Fredman, Ramona; Mrs. Ida Atkinson and Mrs. Nellie Watkins of this city; Mrs. Flora Hayden, Bartlesville, and Mrs. Sophia Shupp, Canyon City, Colo.; and two sons, W. L. Irby of Bolton and C. W. Irby of this city. Funeral services were in charge of Rev. Harry Gordon of the First Methodist church and burial was in Mount Hope cemetery.
