William H. Merville was an American Civil War Veteran who enlisted on 25 April 1861 as a private in Company A, 28th Infantry Regiment New York at Lockport, NY. He received a disability discharge on 6 August 1861 having been wounded in his right leg. He enlisted again on 30 August 1862 as a private in the 23rd LIght Artillery Regiment New York at Porter, NY; was promoted to a full corporal on 21 July 1864 and was mustered out 14 July 1865. He married his wife Mary about 1867. They eventually moved to Bradford, PA where he worked in the oil industry as a foreman. Subsequently they moved to Sisterville, WV where he died.
