James Russell Gripentrog February 21, 1917 – October 10, 2006. James Russell Gripentrog, 89, died peacefully in his sleep on October 10, 2006 in The Village at Skyline's Memory Care Unit, Colorado Springs. He was born February 21, 1917 in White, South Dakota to Gus and Frances Mae Gripentrog. After graduation from high school in White as senior class president and valedictorian, Jim attended Nettleton Commercial College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where he met his future wife, Verna Kramer. He was well known in both schools as an outstanding athlete. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific as a signalman. He loved the outdoors, especially gardening and fishing. He is survived by his wife, Verna, of 64 years; two children: Greg of Colorado Springs and Vicky Warren of Plano, TX; four grandchildren: Tracie Schultz, Todd Gripentrog and Tammy Upton all of Colorado Springs, and Matthew Warren of Plano, TX; five great grandchildren; and one sister, Alice Jones of Long Beach, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Helen Green and his brother, Wally Gripentrog. Jim had an abiding faith in Jesus Christ and believed in eternal life. Visitation will be held Monday, October 16 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Blunt Mortuary, 2229 W. Colorado Ave. Colorado Springs. Private family services will be held.
